Secure National Identity Card (NIC)
Apply in person at the Consulate with:
- Your old, expired France ID card.

- A valid consular card.
National ID cards are issued free for first-time applicants and renewals on presenting your old card. For a renewal without the old card, a fee of €25 will be charged.
Extending the Validity Period of Your Identity Card | republic of france id card
As of January 1, 2014, the validity period for national identity cards was extended to 15 years for adults. The five-year extension applies to new, secure identity cards issued from January 1, 2014, and those issued between January 2, 2004, and December 31, 2013.
Note: This extension doesn’t apply to secure national identity cards for minors. They are valid for 10 years.
The following countries accept the national identity card as a travel document:
- European Union countries, Schengen zone, Andorra, Monaco, Vatican, San Marino, Albania, ex-Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia (for dual citizens or group trips), Morocco (for dual citizens or group trips).
Reminder About Identity Documents and Visas
Check required documents (national identity card, passport, visa) to enter your destination country. Valid national identity card is required within the EU. Outside the EU, most states require a passport valid for several months after your return. Make timely appointments to renew passports and keep document copies at home. Save documents online for added security. In case of loss or theft abroad, report to local police, and the Embassy or Consulate can issue a pass or emergency passport with applicable fees.
